Ray has a side scheme going too, taking kickbacks on the love hotel project whose construction he's managing. The suburban Aussie marrieds live across a river from each other, the much older, domesticated Ray in an upper middle-class neighborhood, Carla on the wrong side of the water.
The cheaters will lure their families to the same Christmas picnic celebration, to provide alibis while still being able to sneak off and chat about the arson.
Carla's tow-truck owner hubby, Smithy, is a fearsome tough to cross, so will the philanderers' holiday gifts come through, or explode in their lying faces?
Written by David Stevens. Aussies aren't known for their film making. After seeing "Not Quite Hollywood" I'm not surprised! But, they really do do some impressive films "Wolf Creek", "Storm Warning" to name a few.
Now, "The Square" is another worthy film. Don't have a bloody affair! It's simple and yet after affair related films such as "Fatal Attraction", "Dear Wife" we still get idiots doing the dirty on their poor faithful partners!
Always men as well, just an observation. Now down to The Square's realistic, raw directing it may just drill this idea into people with adultery on their minds.
The screenplay, although wildly in-your-face is actually presented as quite believable. The Square can be quite shocking at times and the ending left me feeling quite flourished.
I don't think The Square should disappoint you, some might find the pacing a bit lazy but the sharp screenplay should keep you on edge.

The movie was inspired by a diary, found in a second-hand couch bought by Moyle, detailing the life on the streets of a young mentally disturbed woman.
She had no intention of reaching the age of Moyle did a script that attracted the interest of Tim Curry. He then arranged for Jacob Brackman to do a rewrite.
The script caught the attention of Robert Stigwood , the impresario behind the musical films Saturday Night Fever , Grease , and Sgt.
Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band Moyle said, "I think they had been planning to shoot something this summer that fell through, and I was hysterical about wanting it to be shot, so we made a deal with them.
They were very sensitive to the script. Although Tim Curry has a supporting role in Times Square and filmed all his scenes in two days , his familiarity with film audiences ensured that he received top-billing onscreen and in the film's advertising above the two unknown leads, year-old Robin Johnson and year-old Trini Alvarado.
Robin Johnson's casting was a bit of a fluke. According to Robin, she was cutting class — cutting up — and had been approached by some supposed talent scout, claiming she should audition for the film.
She had never seen or heard from this man after the one meeting and no one from the film crew knew of him. Filming started in New York in October The original cut of Times Square contained lesbian content which was mostly deleted from the final print which is still a lesbian love story.
Moyle revealed in the DVD audio commentary that the film's integrity was compromised by the removal of the more overt lesbian content, and the addition of several "inappropriate" songs to the film's soundtrack at the insistence of producer Robert Stigwood, who wanted the film to be another Saturday Night Fever and insisted that the soundtrack be a double album to make the film more commercially viable.
Allan Moyle and Robin Johnson remarked on the audio commentary that the loss of key scenes made the narrative disjointed, and damaged the story's emotion and characterizations.
They also note that the film's focus changes, jarringly, from Pamela to Nicky, and that the increasingly outlandish and unrealistic story undermines the movie's gritty, on-location documentary style.
Moyle left production before the film was completed, and other people supervised scenes to accompany the soundtrack additions for example, the sequence featuring teens preparing to go to the Sleez Sisters' final concert was shot by the film's second unit.
The version of the film released to theatres was not Moyle's preferred cut; however, he still acknowledges the finished film's importance as it documents a Times Square that mostly no longer exists: the film was shot on location and captured Times Square's seedy, grindhouse atmosphere before it was cleaned up in the mids.
Upon its original theatrical release, Times Square was not a commercial or critical success. Reviewing the film, Roger Ebert wrote, " Times Square rarely comes together into anything more than a good idea that fails, but there are times when it seems on the brink of wonderful things.
Of all the bad movies I've seen recently, this is the one that projects the real sense of a missed opportunity - of potential achievement gone wrong.
The problem may be with the screenplay. This is a movie that knows who its characters are, but doesn't seem sure about what they're doing. Other reviews of the film were generally negative, although Robin Johnson's performance was frequently singled out for praise.
Johnson, in fact, signed an exclusive three-year contract with the Robert Stigwood Organization , with the understanding that RSO would develop film and music projects for her.
RSO intended to market Johnson as "the female John Travolta ," and her contract legally barred her from accepting offers or auditions from rival companies.
Johnson therefore turned down calls from agents, producers and casting directors, but the projects RSO promised her never came to fruition.
Johnson took a job as a bank teller whilst waiting for her RSO contract to expire, and by the time it did, there were no offers for work.
Johnson did some minor film and TV roles, but by the late s, she gave up on acting and got a job as a traffic reporter on a Los Angeles radio station.

His next show is "The Square", an installation which invites passersby to altruism, reminding them of their role as responsible fellow human beings.
But sometimes, it is difficult to live up to your own ideals: Christian's foolish response to the theft of his phone drags him into shameful situations.
Meanwhile, the museum's PR agency has created an unexpected campaign for "The Square". The response is overblown and sends Christian, as well as the museum, into an existential crisis.
Östlund continues exploring "Turist's" major theme further here: comfort zones and what happens when we dare or are forced to leave them. Comfort zones govern our lives — we create them for personal use and on every level of human society — but in order to reach new grounds, we need to leave them.
And if the zones end or vanish for some reason, the life as we have known it can break down quite easily.
The central character is an director of a museum played by Claes Bang , a nice guy who gets into trouble both in private life and professionally.
It plays out like a situational comedy about polarities, in art, our life and modern man in general.
For example, We want the art to mean something and touch us deeply, but don't like to invest ourselves and open up for it; we want to express ourselves freely but can't necessarily tolerate others also doing this; we want power but we don't like responsibilities, etc etc.
Yes, the approach is rather artsy but the movie is still pretty mainstream friendly, thanks to all the "comedy". Actors do wonderful job illustrating all these polarities on screen.
This long minute movie follows and examines the characters closely and relies on nuanceful performances quite heavily.
The main problem is the directing style which sometimes seems to slow down just because, not that a situation couldn't be done any faster.
There are scenes where camera finds it target and just stays with it almost to the point of dozing off, just because it can. I think Östlund has tried to prove a point — we want fast results, not to invest ourselves — but I also think he has overused it here.
Movies nowadays are usually not that slow anymore, and it wears you down getting accustomed to this slowness. But it's still an intriguing and quite powerful movie about what life and art mean, or can mean.
He's like an uncanny mix of Bruce Lee and monkey man! That's what art is supposed to be all about, I guess: taking us out of our comfort zones and making us feel something even without understanding it well.
